The name “Pilobolus” comes from a type of fungus that shoots spores with a speed up to 45 mph. Part of the company’s mission statement is to embody “the qualities of our namesake fungus – adventurous, adaptive, athletic, surprising and revealing of beauty in unexpected ways.” The dance troupe explores new and inventive uses human body as an expressive art form. Signature lifts, contortions, and poses allow for the performers to push the boundaries of dance with energy and vibrancy.
Pilobolus formed in 1971 when its founders met at Dartmouth College. The original seven members created dozens of dance sequences, and today the company has over 120 choreographic works to their name. The company has performed on Broadway, the Oscars, the Olympic games, and embarked on multiple international tours over the last four decades.
Pilobolus’ current ensemble features fourteen dancers who perform selections from their wide repertoire ofroutines. Well-known works include “Skyscrapers,” depicting multiple couples dancing in a variety of colored costumes, and “Symbiosis,” a duet in which the two performers appear to reshape each other’s bodies. Newer works include “All Is Not Lost,” in which the dancers perform on top of glass while a live camera feed shows their footwork from underneath, and “Branches,” choreographed entirely to the sounds of nature.
